The word Eumenides, by the way, means “kindly ones,” and so the Furies – which were scary, frenzied monsters at the play's beginning – the Furies are changed into the kindly ones. According to most mythological accounts, the three Furies—named Alecto (the unceasing), Megaera (the jealous), and Tisiphone (the avenger)—were literally born of blood.
