Zeuschner is the Burroughs, Edgar Rice (01 September 1875–19 March 1950), author, was born in Chicago, the fifth of six sons of businessman George Tyler Burroughs and Mary Evaline Zieger. He was the creator of Tarzan, a unique icon of twentieth-century literature whose name is recognized around the world. In 1913 Burroughs founded his own publishing house Edgar Rice Burroughs‚ Inc. Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises and Burroughs-Tarzan Pictures were founded in 1934. The world famous protagonist in Tarzan books is John Clayton‚ Lord Greystoke‚ whose aristocratic parents‚ John Clayton and his wife‚ Lady Alice‚ are abandoned on the west coast of Africa by mutinous sailors.
His father had been a major in the Union army during the Civil War. Edgar Rice Burroughs attended the Brown School then, due to a diphtheria epidemic, Miss Coolie's Maplehurst School for Girls, then the Harvard School, Phillips Andover and the Michigan Military Academy. He was a mediocre student and flunked his examination for West Point. Edgar Rice Burroughs was born in Chicago on September 1st, 1875. His father, George Tyler Burroughs, was a Civil War veteran and now a successful businessman. Major Burroughs and his wife Mary had five other boys besides Edgar, but two of the children died in infancy, leaving Edgar the youngest of the family.
