Sense of Coherence (SOC) was developed by Antonovsky (1987) and consists in its original version of 29 questions (SOC-29) and in a short version of 13 questions (SOC-13). SOC-13 was translated into Norwegian and age-adapted to children and adolescents by Torsheim and Wold in 1998. Antonovsky (1979, 1987) also postulated that significant life stressors diminish the belief that the world is comprehensible, meaningful, and manageable, and may result in psychological distress. Thus, sense of coherence is also a mediator of the effect of life stressors on mental health. Empirical research has supported this postulation in early relation between health, personal coping and job stress. As proposed by Antonovsky (1979; 1987), sense of coherence (SOC) was used as an important individual approach for Salutogenesis; health maintenance. Health was measured as self-reported health and job stress according to the demand-control model (DCM) by Karasek (1979).

Antonovsky 1987 sense of coherence

Main positive psychological well-being construct measured: Meaning in life Antonovsky refers to a sense of coherence instead, which is central to successfully coping with challenges. When you have a sense of coherence, you see the world as something that is manageable, understandable, and meaningful. The Sense of Coherence Scale and Questionnaire (PDF) One of the key supporters of the salutogenic model is Antonovsky, 1979, Antonovsky, 1987who proposed the construct, sense of coherence (SOC), which he described as a ‘global orientation, a pervasive feeling of confidence that the life events one faces are comprehensible, that one has the resources to cope with the demands of these events, and that these demands are meaningful and worthy of engagement' (1987, p. 19). Antonovsky’s sense of coherence (SOC) theory relates to the adaptive capacity of humans.
